Straps
While yoga is not a competitive endeavor, many people strive to keep up with those around them in yoga class. But the goal of yoga is not to compete--to keep up with anyone--or even to achieve perfect alignment. The ultimate attainment in yoga is union between mind body and spirit. Each person approaches the practice of yoga from wherever they happen to be at the moment. Some are strong and flexible, some have been injured, some are older, some are pregnant and some are simply rusty and out of practice. Each person will do yoga asanas in a way that serves their body where it is right now. Strain will do nothing but eventually cause injury and pain. Simply continuing to practice yoga will help the student to increase in strength, flexibility, clarity of mind, and poise. While they are in the process of attaining additional strength and flexibility, the use of yoga props can help people reach proper alignment in their yoga postures particularly in binds where one hand can not reach the other, or when you need to reach and hold your feet, but tight muscles prevents this. There are many yoga poses where a yoga strap would be helpful for those who lack sufficient strength or flexibility.
The basic yoga strap is often made of 100% cotton and has a buckle at the end with which to cinch the strap. Yoga straps come in a natural, off-white color, or they also come in many colors. The cotton fabric is soft because it must be gripped firmly in your hands, but it is also nice and strong. These straps are also machine washable to keep them clean.
Yoga straps are available from your local yoga studio's yoga shop, sporting goods and clothing stores, or you can purchase them online at full service yoga online stores that sell items such as yoga mat, strap, blocks, other yoga props, clothing and various accessories. Some of these online shops that sell yoga mats will sell you a yoga mat strap with free shipping included.
Here is an example of yoga postures using strap:
The Paschimottanasana, or Seated Forward Bend requires the person to sit and reach forward so that the hands grab hold of the feet. For those who lack the flexibility to complete this pose, the yoga strap wrapped around the feed and held in the hands will allow the person to do the stretch and continue to deepen it until they begin to develop the flexibility in the hamstrings and back to be able to complete the pose without the strap.
